Sheffield

Circus Hallam events, training sessions, workshops and master classes are located in the heart of the city, close to the train station, tram stops and buses. Being in the city centre means there are plenty of shops, supermarkets, cafés, bakeries, pubs and restaurants, and just about anything else you might want to buy within walking distance. We plan to produce a map with some useful locations marked on it which will be available from the registration desk at the convention.

Sheffield is a city and metropolitan borough of South Yorkshire, England. Its name derives from the River Sheaf, which runs through the city. The city is located within the valleys of the River Don and its four tributaries, the Loxley, the Porter Brook, the Rivelin, and the Sheaf. 61% of Sheffield’s entire area is green space, and a third of the city lies within the Peak District National Park. There are more than 200 parks, woodlands and gardens in the city, and an estimated 2.5 million trees, giving Sheffield the highest ratio of trees to people of any city in Europe.

People who wish to be identified as coming from Sheffield call themselves Sheffielders. The latest (2010 est.) population estimate for the City of Sheffield is 555,500 residents. This represents an increase of about 17,000 people since the last census in 2001. People from Sheffield are colloquially known to residents of the surrounding towns of Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Chesterfield as “dee-dars”, which derives from the traditional pronunciation of the “th” in the dialectal words “thee” and “thou”, still used, especially by older people, in South Yorkshire. Many Yorkshire dialect words and aspects of pronunciation derive from old Norse due to the Viking influence in this region.

National parks are beautiful, spectacular and often dramatic areas of countryside that have been protected for the benefit of the nation. The Peak District is a great place to go walking, climbing, canoeing/kayaking, horse riding, fishing, sailing and windsurfing, caving etc. Or even a lovely place to go have a picnic/BBQ, or you could even visit one of the village pubs for some food and drink.

If you are not really the sporty or outdoors type, or if the weather isn’t so great (this is England so expect rain!) then Sheffield has a number of cinemas including a new IMAX cinema at Cineworld, and the Showroom which is one of the largest independent cinemas in Europe.
